Zelf vuurwerk afsteken

More than 15,800 pyrotechnic products confiscated in an operation prior to the start of the Fallas 2026

The products intervened "were stored without complying with the minimum safety conditions required, which posed a risk to both workers and citizen safety"

Agents of the Weapons and Explosives Interventions of the VI Zone of the Valencian Community have developed this operation aimed at controlling the market of pyrotechnic articles, especially in relation to their distribution, trade and acquisition, with the aim of combatting the illicit trafficking of these products and guaranteeing citizen safety.

Before the start of the festivities, and in the face of the increase in the sale of pyrotechnic products during these dates - sometimes not complying with the provisions of current regulations in this regard, emphasises the Benemérita -, the Headquarters of the VI Civil Guard Zone launched the operation 'Fallas 2026'.

After a period of analysis and making the appropriate arrangements, on February 24, 2026, in a coordinated action in the three provinces of the Valencian Community, agents of the Weapons and Explosives Interventions proceeded to inspect 7 establishments that were dedicated to the sale of pyrotechnic products.

As a result of these actions, 15,835 pyrotechnic products with a weight of 52.73 Kg NEC have been intervened, which did not comply with the provisions of the Regulation of Pyrotechnic Articles.

The Civil Guard highlights, in a statement, that this type of items can only be marketed by duly notified or authorised establishments. In addition, the products intervened "were stored without meeting the minimum safety conditions required, which posed a risk to both workers and citizen security."

This security force emphasises the importance of acquiring pyrotechnic products only from authorised points of sale and of respecting the safety standards established for their use.

Vulcano's "experimental" pyrotechnics will set the Prefallas in el Maritim next Saturday

The event, which will be held on March 7 in Barraca-Espadán, will use more than 2,000 fireworks and 800 firing orders to create visual choreographies that evoke musical rhythms.

The Falla Barraca-Espadán has announced the celebration of an experimental pyrotechnics show that, under the artistic title of "Pólvora a la mar", will fire the Vulcano Pyrotecnia with the sponsorship of Cervezas Turia.

The show will take place on Saturday, March 7 at 9:15 pm in the demarkation of the Cabanyal commission and follows the tone of the shots that Vulcano stages during the days before Fallas en la Pólvora a la Vespra, as he did in one of his strong territories, the Plaza del Pintor Segrelles.

From Pirotecnia Vulcano they explain that the project seeks to unite technological innovation and pyrotechnic tradition. In this sense, they clarify that "the most important thing is to be clear that it is not a pyromusical show, but a show full of musicality generated through the pyrotechnic artifices themselves." The objective is to create visual choreographies that evoke rhythms and musical sequences through the technology applied to pyrotechnics. The shot will cover several streets of the demarkation to have a "four corners" effect.

From a technical point of view, "Pólvora a la mar" will feature more than 2,000 pyrotechnics and more than 800 firing orders, coordinated for a show of approximately five minutes. Three Vulcano Pyrotechnics technicians will be in charge of managing the execution of the assembly, which will require several hours of prior preparation due to its technical complexity. Each artifice will be programmed with a specific firing order to achieve the feeling of musicality that defines the show.

The event also features its own visual identity. The poster of the first edition of "Pólvora a la mar", designed by Ibán Ramón, marks the beginning of the construction of the graphic image of the contest, an identity that will be developed and consolidated in future editions. Its minimalist and contemporary aesthetics seek to align with the concept of the show: an innovative, current and high-visual quality pyrotechnic proposal.

As the designer himself explains, the poster also highlights some of the features that define the uniqueness of the event, especially its location in the maritime neighbourhood of Cabanyal. Conceived with a vocation of growth and with the possibility of extending in the future to other commissions in the area, the design places the graphic representation of the sea as a central element, functioning as a direct reference to the urban and geographical context in which the show takes place.

All this is possible thanks to the sponsorship of Cervezas Turia, which has opted to promote a unique cultural and festive proposal focussed on the tradition of gunpowder, one of the most recognisable signs of Valencian culture. The initiative takes place in a neighbourhood with a unique identity linked to the sea, where the Fallas live with their own personality and within a historical commission located in "el cor del Cabanyal", made up of more than 300 falleros and falleras.

Polvora a la Mar (21.15 uur) wellicht te combineren met de opening van de lichtstraat van falla Malvarrosa-Antonio Ponz-Cavite om 20.30 uur. Ook daar komt vuurwerk aan te pas.

Malvarrosa will inaugurate its lights with gunpowder and live music on Saturday

On Friday they will only turn on the lighting during the jury's visit and they will discover their 'jewellery sky' on March 7 at 8:30 pm

An earthquake-proof square

The cathedral of gunpowder will undergo a comprehensive renovation after having endured impassively, for several decades, 'mascletaes' of up to 270 kilos. The miracle has been worked on a pavement composed of 18-centimetre-thick granite stones

The municipal government of Valencia is preparing a comprehensive reform of the Town Hall square led by the architect Miguel del Rey, who with his Re-natura project will introduce numerous modifications in the most emblematic space of the Cap i Casal. Some remarkable news are related to the "gunpowder cathedral", as the perimeter is popularly known that for 19 days hosts the mascletaes of Fallas.

Specifically, the comprehensive reform project budgeted at 11.4 million euros will replace the polygonal space inherited from the old parking lot with an ellipse, recalling the form used by Goerlich in the flower market. The design has taken into consideration the 2,209 m2 of the current surface of the fire area and will maintain a similar size in the ellipse. In addition, the granite finish in this area will include volatile shapes - an evocation of the 'volaorets' firecrackers - that will avoid uniform planes on a soil very marked by the footprints of fire.

When this happens and the current granite pavement gives way to the new pieces, it would not hurt to pay intimate tribute to a floor that has been enduring for more than 20 years the rigour of gunpowder without the slightest hint of collapse, beyond the logical blackened in some cobblestones of the central space of the Town Hall Square.

The last reform of this space was undertaken in the summer of 2003. The chronicles of the time told that the machines work piecemeal inside the pedestrian area to renew a pavement seriously deteriorated by the fallaros shots. Meanwhile, the workers of the Parks and Gardens delegation slantled the bananas that lined the square in mid-August to replace them with the so-called "trees of love." The action was commissioned to the municipal maintenance contracts for about two million euros and then - as it usually happens now - was criticised by the socialist opposition considering that the square deserved a total pedestrianisation with the construction of a cultural centre in the centre.

Be that as it may, that renovation served to consolidate a pedestrian mascletódromo - for many years it was a parking lot for the whole city and later only for accredited vehicles - and renew, incidentally, a floor from which no pebbles jumped, but it was more irregular than the one implemented in 2003. The keys to the current pavement were provided some time later in the contest of ideas for the integral reform of the square, the contest that Miguel del Rey won.

Within the framework of this tender, a bidding company asked about the technical characteristics of the paving planned for the Fallas and mascletà areas, and the city council responded with some recommendations included in a report of the Municipal Service of Coordination of Works on public roads and Infrastructure Maintenance: "For the determination of the sections of firms, the Catalogue of firms and Pavements of the City of Valencia will be used. It is reported that when in 2002 the square was repaved, for the choice of the type of pavement of the area where the mascletà is shot, a test was carried out with printed concrete in order to know its behaviour during a mascletà and it was observed that it cracked. Therefore, we opted for the solution that currently exists, granite stones 18 centimetres thick, which so far have given good results," said the document dated May 2018.

Air fire

In reality, an important part of the mascletà does not detonate on the ground. The pyrotechnicians hang the thunder at different heights anchored in the cage and it is common for the terrestrial phase to concentrate on the final earthquake, for which the hardness of the solid granite is trusted, since the explosion hits directly on the stone leaving the aforementioned marks, but without the ground cracking with the shock wave. After each shot, the cleaning services apply pressurised water and leave the pavement ready for the next day.

The good results of this pavement laid in 2003 have been extended until today and the zero kilometre of Valencia remains bombproof. According to the city council at the beginning of the cycle, Valencia will shoot more than 7 tons of gunpowder these Fallas, half in the mascletaes of the Town Hall Square. On Saturday, March 14, Pirotecnia Aitana will launch the most explosive mascletà of 2026 with 274 kilos distributed in 360 seconds. The show will be called "The Beauty of Sound" and will have three airborne ensembles, two earthquakes and one certainty: the granite of the square will not break.
