Recently the City of Toronto passed a by-law allowing Consumer Fireworks to be sold and used anytime of the year. This by-law came about with a great effort by the Canadian Pyrotechnic Council who's President at the time, Ann Rastin of Victory Fireworks, ran a "common sense" campaign. The Canadian industry got together years ago and created this Council as a united voice. With combined strength it can now talk about implementing more "common sense" by-laws. One of the driving reasons for opening up Fireworks sales to year round

is because Toronto is known to be a multi-cultural society with its population celebrating many different foreign holidays. It is unfair to only allow them only on traditional Canadian holidays while many other holidays traditionally celebrate with fireworks. That is not to say these holidays were never celebrated but it required more licensing and procedures to accomplish. At least now by allowing Fireworks to be used more often it will be like driving a car 1 time a year, more familiarity equals higher safety.

The public may use the Fireworks off of a national holiday after purchasing a $25 license which requires a site plan and permission by the property owner. Retail establishments selling fireworks all year round will need to pay $2,500 for a license while those seasonal mobile retailers pay $500.
