Sorrento buys into battle of fireworks

A battle of the fireworks is looming as another Australia Day pyrotechnics show to rival those at Perth and Fremantle is planned for Sorrento Quay, Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Nigel Steven, spokesman for the 60 Sorrento Quay businesses who are funding the $25,000 show, said the decision had been taken after requests from 500 local families and visitors wanting to escape crowds and potential anti-social behaviour at the Lotterywest Skyworks.

“With anti-social behaviour and little kids in massive crowds, it is not a great night out, Mr Steven said.

He said the alcohol-free show, expected to attract 20,000 mums, dads and kids from Perth’s northern suburbs, would start at 9pm and run for 30 minutes.

The display would be visible from the beach within Hillarys Boat Harbour and from beaches to the north and south, Mr Steven said. Restaurants on the quay would be open until 11pm, their normal summer trading hours, and a fun park would offer rides until the fireworks started.

Mr Steven said it would be “foolhardy to compete with the Perth and Fremantle fireworks.

“We don’t want to impact on the city (fireworks) but want to provide an alternative for families who otherwise would not go, he said.

Fremantle mayor Peter Tagliaferri, who last week announced plans to host an alternative fireworks — labelled a “cracker show by Perth Lord Mayor Peter Nattrass — congratulated the Sorrento group. “The more localised fireworks displays there can be, the better, he said.

A police spokesman said they would need to assess the Sorrento proposal before determining if it would stretch resources, already heightened for the City of Perth show expected to attract 400,000.

Dr Nattrass could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
