HITTIER - Police seized about 150 pounds of illegal fireworks Monday from a self-storage unit.
An anonymous tip led police to Mini U Storage at 10231 S. Colima Road. The caller said there were illegal fireworks there. A sheriff's dog confirmed the presence of the fireworks at one of the units, according to Whittier Detective Jared Burns. A search warrant for the unit was served at 4:15 p.m. Burns said fireworks in boxes and plastic bags were found in unit D31. There were enough to fill nine boxes.
The fireworks were made in China and included "Quick Nick Big Bang artillery shells," fountains called "Raiden," flammable rockets with the moniker "Casper's Revenge" and firecrackers dubbed "Little Red Bomb." Some of the devices carried warnings it shoots flaming balls. No one was arrested Monday. Burns said the investigation is continuing.
Police are looking for a local man as a suspect but didn't name him. "Our concern is, it's so close to a residential area so that's why we acted the way we did," said Whittier Lt. Chuck Ketelsleger. Burns said the fireworks will be destroyed.
A sergeant and K-9 unit from the sheriff's Arson and Explosive Detail and a county fire arson investigator also responded to the scene. Anyone with information is asked to called Whittier police at (562) 945-8271.
