· The St. Mary Fireworks Factory of Mqabba - Malta

This fireworks factory was founded in 1960. Around 15 pyro-technicians contribute towards the success of each fireworks display that this factory produces annually at various villages. · The St. Michael’s Fireworks Factory of Lija - Malta

This fireworks factory was founded in 1925. Around 15 pyro-technic enthusiasts produce and choreograph all the works displays that are held during the feast of Christ the Saviour between the 4th and 6th August at Lija, as well as other village feast displays in Malta and Gozo. About the Festival

The Ministry for Tourism & Culture is proud to present The Malta International Fireworks Festival 2006 29th & 30th April

Two competitive evenings of spectacular Maltese & International Pyro -Musical Displays at the Grand Harbour, Valletta

General Information

Following the tremendous success of four consecutive editions of Fireworks Festivals, the Ministry for Tourism and Culture in collaboration with the Malta Pyrotechnic Association are proud to present the first edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival,.

Three Maltese fireworks factories and two foreign companies will be competing for various trophies and cash prizes by their presentation of pyro-musical displays. Apart from these displays, throughout the two festival nights seven local fireworks factories will also be demonstrating their abilities in the field of traditional Maltese fireworks. All this through the accompaniment of playful laser displays.

As the festival is timed to coincide with the 2nd anniversary of Malta’s entry into the Eurpean Union the European as well as the Maltese national anthems will be played at midnight of Sunday, April 30th. This will be immediately followed by a spectacular pyro-musical display designed and manufactured by Orzella Fireworks Company of Rome.

All this will take place in Grand Harbour which offers the most ideal location and what is probably one of the most breath-taking views of the island, encompassing forts St Angelo, Ricasoli and St. Elmo, as well as the fortified walls of Valletta and Senglea.

An international adjudicating panel will be voting for the best pyrotechnic display. The attending spectators will have also the chance to cast their vote for the best display by smsing via their mobile phones. The presentation of the prizes will take place on May 1st at a venue to be announced.

I can already predict the winner :w as the festival will probably be a pyromusical contest rather than a general technical contest. But I rest to be corrected upon who will win. There can be surprizes. BRING IT ON.

My only disapointment is rather big actualy. That this event is called the Malta Fireworks Festival when only very few of the Maltese groups are actualy taknig part. Infact the number of participating groups is actually decreasing every year.

I remember when our group took part, there were 33 rival factories that took part and the event was a major succsess. A year later 10 of these 33 factories did not take part for a reason or another. This year I learn that another 11 factories will not take part. To my surprize one particular group that in the past took the Fireworks festival very serious is also not taking part this year.

The organizers seem to encourage more the International groups rather than the national ones.

I see that this event is a furthur boost to the maltese traditinal fireworks but things seem to have gone a bit furthur away from the event's original scope. I noticed since the past years that the Maltese unique shells are somewhat given the orange lights in preference to the usual common loads of ball shell shows. I urge the organizers to not let go of the concept of boosting the Maltese fireworks tradition. I also wish that the daylight fireworks shows be given more space in this event because I noticed that they have been completely abandoned! |:(

I must confess that I had higher hopes for this years edition.

but lets see how it turns out. :p

While I urge all enthusiasts to visit Malta and enjoy this event, I also urge everyone to visit the actual Maltese feasts which take place in summer. The festival hardly comes close to the original thing but its a very good preview.

I also urge you to present yourselves at the place in advance if you wish a good place to enjoy it to the full.

Hope that eveything goes well.

:D Hey, I'm into pyrotechincs and assist when i could for the Feast of Kirkop. St. Leonard, Although i live in gharghur! Well already a day past from the festival and it was great!! Jubilee Where Really Good, Luso Pirotecnia where boring and only the last bit good. Wait.....what about Mqabba? THEY WHERE EXCELLENT. The best was MALTA written with fireworks! (although many didn't notice). In my opinion Mqabba should win as they offered a great variety from (Kulur, beraq, blalen, raxx...KOLLOX). But I still have to see what Lija and Mosta have to offer. Lija should be the main competitor! We must not forget the Italinas who will also be offering an Amazing Show! (The Italians are not part of the Competition though). The only bad thing there was, was the Sound. It was echoing! Probably there can be nothing to do but if there is please fix it :p !! I missed the usual visual effect on Fort St. Angelo which due to the change of place where the fireworkes are burnt couldn't be done.
I wish Everyone the Best of luck And Hope Everything goes well.
Ps: PRAY FOR GOOD WEATER
CAw Nies, Mohkom Em!
Forsi xi darba niedhlu Ahna Hal Kirkop u nifqghu Kul Mem!! Hehe :D

Bye Bye

HI Nies!
Today is Monday and the 2 Days Awaited for the past year has ended. Yesterday was another day of success. Lija were very good followed by Mosta. They both showed that they are capable to WIn and produce fireworks like other foreign countries. The italians displayed an excellent show as it was very original.
Here is the rating I gave (In my opinion): 1st Mqabba, 2nd Hal-Lija, 3rd United Kingdom, 4th Mosta, 5th Portugal
it was a Gr8 success and i hope next year the competition will be bigger including more Maltese Fireworks Factories.
Prosit Imqabba & Hal Lija!!
