Tewksbury -
The skies over Tewksbury will be dark on the night of the Fourth of July. The annual fireworks display has been cancelled this year because the town can’t afford it.

The fireworks cost $13,500, and the police detail adds $2,500. It comes out of the Patriotic Activities Committee budget, which will be completely eliminated for fiscal 2008.

“It's important that the residents of Tewksbury understand this is probably the tip of the iceberg, and this is by no means the only painful thing we will have to do, said Selectman Todd Johnson. He suggested that the town should seek a corporate sponsor for the fireworks.

Recreation Director Roy Patterson also called off the evening concert, but the field day at Livingston Park will go on. The Knights of Columbus and the Elks provide the refreshments, and volunteers run games. The popular family event features sack races, a decorated bicycle parade, and the crowning of two toddlers as Mr. and Miss Tewksbury.

The Memorial Day service and parade will go on Monday as scheduled, but they will be cut next year, along with the Veterans Day service.

“This year is probably the last Memorial Day parade, said Veterans Agent Jimmy Williams. “The veterans are the first to be called and the first to be cut.
