Govt releases new code of practice to tighten up the laws on fireworks, including a limit on the amount of flash powder in them.

14 April 2007
The Government is moving to tighten up the laws on fireworks.

It has released a new code of practice for the fireworks which can be sold in shops. The code includes a limit on the amount of flash powder fireworks can contain, or in other words, how much bang you are getting for your buck.

Environmental Risk Management Authority spokeswoman Andrea Eng says the code will regulate the testing, storage, display and sale of fireworks. She says it will make sure fireworks coming into the country meet safety criteria.

Andrea Eng says the code will also ensure fireworks are less noisy.

The code of practice follows cabinet's decision in December last year to raise the legal purchase age on fireworks from 14 to 18, and to restrict their sale to just three days before Guy Fawkes, down from 10.
