French pyrotechnic experts were judged the brightest sparks in Blackpool's World Fireworks Championships.

The Pyrozone team saw off competition from Croatia, Italy and China in front of an estimated 250,000 spectators in the resort.

Their "Opera of Fire" display, designed and synched to a series of contemporary and classical opera pieces, was named top by judges and the public. The displays have been performed on the promenade throughout September.
Darren Wallis, a pyrotechnical expert on the judging panel, chose Pyrozone's display as technically and artistically superior.

"It felt like the performance had been designed using the full size of the Pier as a stage," he said.

"The music worked perfectly and this could be picked up in the crowd's reaction." Deputy Mayor of Blackpool, Sue Wright said the music set the display apart "The wonderful colours were rich and brilliant, the use of the Pier was excellent and the whole display was exciting," she added.
On Friday night, British team Kimbolton Fireworks put on the final display for the event.
