A GROUP of people in a stolen car are believed to have started a 2ha fire on Albury’s Eastern Hill last night.

Fire crews from Albury Central responded to the blaze about 9.30pm.

Witnesses said they saw a group of young people light two small fires with fireworks before speeding away.

The two fires eventually joined together.

Albury Central fire station officer Simon Huggett said the blaze took about 30 minutes to control and an hour to completely black out.

“Given the location we had to clear any shrubs and sticks from the vicinity so it didn’t spread any further, Mr Huggett said.

Albury police arrived at the scene just after 9.30pm.

The witnesses had recorded numberplate details of the car that fled the scene but police checks indicated the vehicle had been stolen.

Investigations are continuing.
