Long time Sky Sox employee Rai Henniger was critically injured Saturday afternoon, when a fireworks display he was preparing unexpectedly went off. Sky Sox general manager Tony Enzer says, "There was some kind of explosion and he was injured in that explosion."
Henniger was preparing a pyrotechnics display to go off with every home run.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department was among the first on the scene. Lt. Brian Keyes says Henniger, ""Head trauma as a result of the display back there and he's been transported to an area hospital."
Henniger was taken to Memorial Hospital. As of nine o'clock Saturday night he was listed in critical condition. That means his vital signs had not yet stabilized.
Sky Sox spokesman Mike Hobson also told News First, Henniger was taken to surgery to repair, "serious facial injuries."
The team says Henniger is a licensed pyrotechnician. He's been working with the team for the past 17 years the management calls him their most beloved employee. Enzer says, "He's a very well beloved Sky Sox employee and a long term Sky Sox employee, we know his wife is with, his family and they are taking good care of him right now."
Both fire fighters and an explosives team with the Colorado Springs Police Department are investigating the accident. As of Saturday evening it was not known why the charge went off. Henniger was working alone. He is expected to survive.
