This website describes a European Union (EU) funded project, CHAF, which aims to provide a better understanding of critical conditions that give rise to explosions in packaged fireworks, and improved methods of predicting performance in large scale storage.

Annual sales of fireworks in the EU amount to tens of thousands of tonnes and similar quantities are held in storage.

This project will provide a framework for the safe storage of bulk fireworks which will have direct benefits to the EU in terms of improving worker safety and reducing the work-related hazards to which members of the public are exposed. Also, reduction of the severity of large scale fireworks storage accidents will have beneficial environmental effects in terms of minimising the release of toxic fumes and reducing off site blast damage.

CHAF is supported by the European Union under the Fifth Research Framework Programme (FP5) and contributing to the Generic Activity "Fight against major natural and technological hazards" within the "Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development" Programme (Contract Number EVG1-CT-2002-00074).

Wow, Inhabitants of place's would never see this. If that's happend, we can forget the fireworkshops at the corner of the street:eek:

Let we hope it never happen! Thanks for the site Meggsy.

One Question: How does she explode all those bombs. It seems that there's one big explosion and after that one comes another one.

Shocking to see Meggsy, I think it's good to show people stuff like this. So many people are buying fireworks, while they don't even know, how dangerous it is, or how to handle it.

Now you're making EXACTLY the same mistake as all those inhabitants, who think all fireworks is the same. 75' and 150' shells are simply not sold in "fireworks-shops at the corner of the street". So it is not camparible. But that doesn't make these video's less shocking....

I would like some video's like this, but then with ordinary consumer fireworks. I guess it still will be shocking, but not even near these movies.

@ OlympicDragon; "without cases"... do you mean those cage constructions in which consumerfireworks is packed these days?

Dont forget that there is also a container with only Happy Birthday Fountains wich explode harder then the container with 150mm shells.

You mean the one with waterfalls? I guess you're right. In comparation this is nothing more than some connected "Ice fountains". I guess the explosion is so big, because it had far the largest amount of kg NEQ (8661!).
[EDIT: after reading the document Z@P posted below, there's stated that the waterfalls are 1.3 classified, so i think comparing with happy birthday foutnains still isn't exactly fair, but still it's frightening a fountain effect seems to cause a worse explosion then fireworls that is designed to explode, such as shells]

Hm, quite scary. ;(

(I wonder what the costs were of this investigation/test ]:) )

No the fireworks inside these containers are not in Transport cardboard packaging.

They are stacked upon eachother without any cover at all!
(pure explosive's)

ps. I don't think these metal cases construction will help at all .HAHA

I got some old tape's with 20 foot containers full of wolff, diamond and lesli consumer fireworks aboard coming from china ,on fire ofcourse.
The fire lasted for about 4 days.
If there was anything aboard like this i think the carrier would sink straight down to the ocean floor!
I try to find it and post it.

Got a point here...

just adding paperboard boxes allready has 2 advantages.
1) there fit less pieces of fireworks (so the container contains less kg NEQ)
2) there is a slight delay in fire(transport). Offcourse an explosion goes straigth through those boxes, but when starting a fire, it delays a bit...

though if the fireworks aint packed, these tests seems not to be exactly accurate and in comparation with reality? Because i guess no-one stores fireworks (depending on the type) outside packaging.

the fireworks were packed in cardboard boxes as you can read and see on photos in the final test results found in this document. http://www.chaf.info/d9-3-4.pdf

i was really shocked when i saw the pictures of the partially filled container with waterfalls, the metal of the container has just burned away / vaporized, there must have been an incredible heat production.
