The leading insurance company is now sending out inspectors to check on companies equipement at firing sites, I don't know if these are spot checks a sample or in time all companies will be looked at. As the HSE doesn't seem to want to get involved to this level its a sort of self regulation, a step in the right direction.

It may be a step in the right direction but there is still a massive opportunity for an organisation to embrace the whole professional industry and lead the way on matters like these (and many others) alas, for whatever reason, this opportunity has not been taken.

Another major incident and I can see it being taken out of the industries hands with the government stepping in and setting standards for all to adhere to, which would not be good

As Meggsy said back last year, at the moment the onus is still on the companies themselves to ensure that the equipment they use is fit for purpose.
The BPA meeting, while very interesting only gave one company's reaction and response to the Wickstead Park incident. It was seen that the research they had done was relevant and the solutions they had developed for their own operations were acceptable to the insurers and the HSE, but owing to an unfortunate diary error there were no alternative viewpoints or solutions demonstrated or detailed (although some discussion of alternatives was made during the open session after the presentations).

My worry was that the described techniques would become some sort of de facto "standard" by which any other system of racking may be judged.

In answer to another question above... According to the presentation, the safety distance (spectators to racks) was in excess of 120 metres.

Two of the companies I work with have now had inspectors from the main Insurance company in the UK attend a display to look at set up and the racking system used, personally I don't think that this is a bad thing, but I was somewhat surprised by the lack of information about the person doing the inspections (background in the industry etc...) ....... still can't imagine it will bring the premiums down lol ;-)
